Why raw feeding (BARF)?

Imagine...

...having to eat McDonald's food every day for the rest of your life.

Not only does that sound boring (at least to me), but it screams "No, there's so much more out there."

Not to mention the effects on health and general physical well-being of highly processed foods...

Our dogs know nothing about available choices and health effects, but they have an unerring instinct for things that they like and that are good for them - or not.

Nutrition and well-being, and therefore nutrition and behaviour, are highly intertwined.

Have you ever thought about your dog being reactive or "disobedient" because it feels uncomfortable? How do you feel and how good are you at work when your stomach hurts or you have daily heartburn...?

Nowadays we are more and more concerned about our food and its effects. Why wouldn't it be the same for our dogs?

When should you consider switching to raw feeding?

Apart from wanting to offer healthy nutrition to our dogs, there are many other things that can lead to starting a raw diet.

If one or more of the following indicators apply, you should consider switching to alleviate symptoms or to support your dog with a tailored diet:

  • Your dog is a "picky" eater and you constantly change foods (may indicate digestive issues).

  • There are known or suspected diseases, e.g. arthritis, epilepsy, allergies/ intolerances, diabetes mellitus etc.

  • All foods you try sooner or later lead to some kind of problem.

  • Your dog often has digestive issues, showing in diarrhea, mushy poop, tummy noises, flatulence, vomiting...

  • Your dog repeatedly deals with rashes, itchiness, ear infections or skin problems.

  • Your dog is struggling with weight issues (too much/too little).

  • Your dog has behavioural issues that you can not figure out what their cause is, training does not work.

What are the benefits of raw feeding?

Raw feeding (such as BARF) comes with plenty of advantages.

Here are just a few:

  • You know what´s in the bowl
No confusion due to unclear declarations on packaging, no unnecessary or questionable additives.

  • Diversity & Fun
    T
he dog’s need to chew is being more satisfied and there is more variety in the bowl. THIS is species-appropriate feeding!

  • Improved well-being & behaviour
With healthy food, the overall well-being improves which can show in better behaviour.

  • Promoting health
Lower risk for tartar (tannsteinn), gastric torsion, allergies and other health risks.

  • Higher life expectancy
A 2003 study shows that dogs that are not fed with ready-made food live statistically 2,7 years longer - that is a lot given the average age of dogs!

  • Individuality
Raw food can be adjusted depending on the dog´s taste and health problems can be addressed.

  • Less faeces (poo):
Because raw food is better used by your dog´s body and therefore produces less "waste".

Doreen, what is this "BARF"?

When you do raw feeding, you need to follow guidelines to make sure you do it right. Many guidelines together make a method and there a different raw feeding methods to choose from.

The method that I follow is called "BARF" and it stands for "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food".

The idea behind this:
The composition of each ration is based on the structure of a potential prey animal. With fresh ingredients and a few other ingredients we try imitating the natural food of a carnivore living in the wild as closely as possible.

What I do for you

Raw feeding can be quite a jungle. There is plenty of information out there, a lot of it is false or incomplete.

Plus, there is a lot of prejudice (I write about this in my blog).

With my raw feeding guidance, I provide you with:

  • Clarity about raw feeding

  • Help to create complete and nutrient-covering food rations

My goal is also to help you achieve this with as little effort as possible.

Here is what I do for you:

  • Thorough analysis of each dog´s food & health history.

  • Food plan/s covering individual needs.

  • Info packages: Ingredients & precautions, transition to raw food.

  • Recommendations for products.

  • Tips for shopping.

  • I am there for you on the way to help you.

The effort and time required for my guidance can vary considerably,  depending on the food plan you choose.

Did you know?

Your BARF food plan is highly individual and adjusted to your dog´s breed, size, age and life stage, but also to health problems, such as allergies, epilepsy or other diseases.

BARF is - among other things - connected with your dog having better teeth, body and mouth odor.

When doing BARF, you will see considerably less faeces (poo) and therefore use fewer plastic bags - good for our environment.

Self-made food is free of additives such as dyes or preservatives - You know exactly what is in it and where it comes from!

Self-made food such as BARF has a higher bioavailability compared to ready-made food. That means that the body can make better use of the food.

BARF does neither prohibit the use of grains, vegetables and fruits nor dairy products. But these ingredients are limited to smaller amounts.
